The Inland Adult Education Consortium has redefined how to assist students in overcoming barriers to transition by hiring four dedicated transition counselors. Participants in this workshop will leave with a toolkit of strategies and ideas that can be used immediately in their own school districts to break barriers faced by adult students caused by culture, socio-economic conditions, immigration, finances, self-esteem, language, and prior academic setbacks.

Voices of Afghan Female Refugee Students

Based on qualitative research, the presenter will describe motivations, challenges and resources of Afghan female refugees pursuing higher education at a community college. She will share experiences of partnering with World Relief and the International Rescue Committee and student projects that evolved from the partnerships. The audience will have an opportunity to engage in learning ways to provide culturally responsive environment to serve refugee student population equitably.

Creating Inclusive Career Pathways in Healthcare for Adult ELLs

There is a national focus on reskilling and upskilling job-seekers and incumbent workers for careers in healthcare. Yet, immigrants, refugees and speakers of other languages with experience and credentials are unable to access these programs, because English is a barrier. Through blended and contextualized English on-ramps to CTE and IET programs, institutions can drive workforce inclusion by making career pathways in health care accessible to English Learners.

Adult Education and Workforce Housing - Building an Integrated Approach from the Ground Up
